Benefits of using a condom




Condoms have a number of benefits.
Male condoms:
  • Are effective and reliable in preventing pregnancy, if used correctly
  • They reduce the risk of STI transmission
  • They are widely available
  • No advance preparation is needed, so they can be used for unplanned sex
  • They are available in different sizes
There no side effects, unless the user is allergic to latex rubber, spermicides, or plastic. A person who is allergic should look for products made with other materials, such as lambskin.
Female condoms:
  • May be inserted up to 8 hours before sex
  • Give the woman control over her sexual health
  • Can be used during a menstrual period
  • Significantly lower the risk of STI transmission
  • May lower the risk of developing cervical cancer as they can protect against infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV)

Cautions and problems

Using a condom has some disadvantages compared with other types of protection, especially if they are not used correctly.
In a year, 18 in every 100couples who use a male condom will become pregnant, and 21 in every 100 couples who use a female condom. This is partly due to human error, such as forgetting to use one.
Apart from having a higher failure rate, the female condom is also less widely available.
Errors that can cause a condom to fail include:
  • Using the wrong size
  • Accidentally tearing the material when opening the package, or during application or use
  • Applying the wrong kind of lubricant

Oil-based lubricants, some creams, baby oil, and petroleum jelly cannot be used with a condom. Only water-based lubricants should be used.

Twenty one suspects have been arrested in Plateau over the killings and unrest in the state - Eleven of the suspects were arrested in connection to the killings in Barkin Ladi and environs - Fourteen others were arrested at the scene of a violent protest after the killings The Nigeria Police Force, Plateau state command, has arrested 21 persons in connection with the killings and unrest in Plateau state. The Nation reports that the suspects were paraded on Monday, July 2, at the OPSH Headquarters in Jos by the media officer of the task force, Major Adam Umar and Police public relations officer Tyopev Terna.
