From hurricanes to flooding, earthquakes to landslides, this year has seen some deadly natural disasters. Take up the STEM Awards design challenge to help combat these catastrophes in future
While some of us prepare for autumn, others around the globe face far more devastating weather. This year devastating hurricanes (Harvey, Irma and Maria) wrought havoc across the Caribbean islands, the Florida peninsula and the Texas coastline, monsoon floods have affected millions in south Asia, while mudslides and flooding near Sierra Leone's capital have killed hundreds.

But, as the recent floods from Bangladesh to Texas show, it’s not just the magnitude of storms that cause disaster: it’s urbanisation. In this year’s Telegraph STEM Awards Atkins, which sponsors the design category, have challenged university level students to come up with new and innovative ways to mitigate the effect of extreme climatic disasters on the construction industry.
What would a flood-proof city look like? Enter the design challenge to help combat natural disasters like those that have devastated people’s homes and lives in 2017
